Recent changes to the sidehill 9th hole have created a fairer and more playable par four,  with a more dramatic and interesting green site. The hole is still a stern test, though one that golfers can overcome with thoughtful play.

The challenge on the 9th is all about the tee shot, and trying to both avoid kicking left down the slope and into the rough, while at the same time avoiding a solitary bunker up the higher right hand side. The conservative play is to aim at the bunker with a club that can’t reach the sand, but that leaves a long, difficult approach shot.

Those able to play long and straight from the tee are rewarded with an approach that gets easier the closer you are to the green. From distance it can be hard to accurately judge the second shot, and to pick the right club. A deep, nasty bunker on the left must be avoided at all cost, while going long will almost certainly lead to a bogey – or worse.

The safest miss on the new 9th green is out to the right, and a subtle chipping swale that still takes great skill to get up and down from. Pars here are well earned.
